Hell is Hot Pink is a comic set in the futuristic, cyberpunk city of Los Caídos. It follows a group of young people in the beginnings of a resistance against a corporate conglomerate named Concilium that controls most of the city.
While HiHP is, at it's core, a found family story, I do consider it to be an 18+ narrative. It is still set in a cyberpunk world and carries with it all the themes that that kind of setting is synonymous with. The world is dark. Dark things happen to the characters. There are themes of abuse and addiction and violence in the comic. (A good analog is a series like Edgerunners, and HiHP can even be somewhat darker at times). While I don't write gratuitously, as the creator, it is my responsibility to be upfront about the kind of story HiHP is. Hence why I felt it was important to place this blurb in the FAQ!
HiHP is set in a world where magic used to not only exist, but was widely used. Centuries ago, a sickness, known to historians as the Caster Plague, swept through the population. It killed most mages and left survivors without any magic left. Society descended into chaos when they realized that not only was their society built on power sources that had ceased to exist, but that the forests and natural habitats across the globe had also begun to die, leaving only desert and sand in their wake.
Humanity turned to technology as a means to save themselves, replacing magic with advanced tech, living in enormous urban areas to forget that outside the city limits was nothing but desert.
Now, so much time later, the only remnants of the old world remain in hidden archives and carefully curated greenhouses.
In the wake of the plague, a company, calling itself Concilium, sifted through the wreckage of society and spearheaded the reconstruction effort. Now, they have grown into a powerful entity with it's hand in medicine, transportation, food, construction and too many more industries to list.
Because of it's cutting edge scientists and what they offer to society, Concilium has historically existed in a legal blind spot almost since its inception. There are rumors of kidnapping. Of hidden levels of the Concilium headquarters. Of something in the basement. But that is all unsubstantiated of course~
